Feeling bored and thought it'd be fun to do a fan version of the 1984 classic gauntlet, but instead of doing giant maps that never end my programmer and I just wanted to do something on a smaller scale. So we'd just do like 12 little maps, 1 player character(Valkyrie) and it'd just be something simple to play. You rush through maps, kill ghosts, grunts, and demons and then fight a sub boss and a boss.

I recreated the graphics at 24x24 pixels for the player character, 1 enemy, and the floor and wall tiles so far. Used the color palette of the original arcade so I could capture a little more of that retro look.

We're calling the game "lil gauntlet' and it's just gonna be a small project designed to tap into some nostalgia. Its essentially meant to be a bathroom game, something you can beat in 10 minutes or less, so its essentially not gonna be much more than a demo with all the features, but I wanted to get a game made before the year ends if possible and been looking back at 1980s nostalgia, and this was a fun game to play.

I'm hoping some kind of demo wont be too far away. I've already finished more than enough sprites to create something simple, but close enough to the original game.

The last 10 months of my life have been some of the hardest moments I've ever experienced. I've been his caregiver since he was diagnoses with stage 3 Multiple Myeloma(Blood cancer) last June. This is all over the course of 10 months and I was there doing my damndest alongside my family to try to help him fight this insidious disease:

He had 22 Trips to the emergency room(My father had no immune system and 12 of these were for low grade fevers).

He was confined at a 3 week stay in a hospital 200 miles away from home after he almost died of cancer last year(this hospital also caused him some PTSD due to being stranded there and on heavy drugs)

He had 4 air chopper rides to this hospital.

He 2 heart attacks that required 3 stents put in.

He had maybe 20 -22 blood transfusions.

He had Covid-19, then Pneumonia, then Bronchitis and finally C-diff over the course of the last 4 months alone.

At 6 am this morning my father finally died in my mothers arms, surrounded by his pets and with all of us in the home hoping he could exit as peacefully as possible while still wishing for some kind of miraculous recovery so he could be in our lives longer.

He was taken from his home draped in an American flag. It's a hell of a thing not just losing your father, but helplessly watching him wither away while he's still young. Feels like the center of my life is gone, even at 42.

Rest in peace Dad. You deserved more time that you were given and we'll always love you.

This is going to mean future updates will probably be a bit sporadic or short. My father got diagnosed with multiple myeloma 1 month ago and almost died from kidney failure. Most of his bone marrow has been eaten up and while there is treatment for this cancer, there is no cure for it. There are only 3 stages to this cancer and he's stage 3. while 53% of people who are stage 3 seem to make it to 5 years, I don't know if my dad will be in that percentile. Bad luck has stalked my folks and family for most of my life, but it really outdid itself this time.

While my mom has dementia, she's still mostly functional and its the early stages of it, my father is a different story entirely because of the cancer. I'm now a caregiver for both of my folks as they're both disabled and just under 65.

Not sure how this will affect my work. It might slow me down, but its not going to make me stop. Things might be kind of slow on my end, this is why.

Happy Pico day.

Should be able to get this done for June 11th Pico day. I always liked Castle Crashers and thought it'd be fun to do something around its universe. I didn't want to mimic the games art style though. I need to challenge myself more as an animator so here's me throwing my hat in the ring. Its gonna be a 52-56 second short toon. The entire project is meant to be silly and fun with a twist at the end. Heres a WIP toon showing off part of a short fight scene in the toon.

Heres the first few seconds of a new short I'm doing. It will be between 50-55 seconds long. I've always wanted to make a DnD series of shorts but didn't have the right idea. I'm 25% done with this toon right now and its primarily an exercise to animate at the proper resolution. I needed a break from doing darker stuff and also needed to up my skills some.

This projects starting to come to life finally. Trying to animate this properly, at a normal resolution and put out an actual big toon. I haven't animated something big for a long time and I want to try to put out something more professional.

My pilot got an honorable mention, sure it ain't 1st-3rd place but its also only an 11.75 page pilot that competed against mostly features. So far my little pilot has gotten 2 rejections, 2 selections, 2 quarter finalists placements, and 1 finalist placement. Still waiting on the results of the finalist placement but its a hell of an ego booster to actually get some kind of placement for your work.

This isn't something I sat around planning for years, granted I have done that with other projects, but this one was planned last springtime and I finished the bulk of writing it by the end of summer. Any remaining drafts were just updating small bits of dialogue and adjusting the ending.

I've really only gotten this last year of my life to professionally pursue screenwriting and a webisode pilot wont build up the same interest or appreciation a feature will, but I'm on the right path all the same.
